We have moved and are running a new B&B in Sutherland.

Astronomy Courses for Kids
and Absolute Beginners

We offer astronomy courses for kids and absolute beginners. Great fun. Lively, and carried out mainly in the field. We are also in an ideal location. There are good dark sky viewing locations from the croftland just behind the house. The adjacent Ashaig Campsite is also applying for Dark Sky Discovery Site status. (More information about other nearby Dark Sky Discovery Sites on Skye ...)

Includes full board (if required) at the B&B and if the weather turns out to be unsuitable for going out and looking at the stars, the cost will only be for the accommodation and meals, and as much of the course has taken place - if at all. We fully understand that if the weather turns out to be unsuitable for stargazing you may wish to return home early. Also we understand that you may need to cancel a booking in advance due to weather forecasts, and in such an event any deposit will be fully refunded.

The courses can be adapted to run over any number of days that you wish. We will customise the course to suit your requirements. Prices on application. Please contact us to let us know your requirements - no obligation involved.

On the course you will learn:

  • The basics of identifying constellations and stars and planets with the unaided eye.
  • Fascinating facts about the universe, and some of the mysteries of modern cosmology such as dark matter and dark energy.
  • A few basics about telescopes and binoculars - if you have your own please bring them! The course, however, will emphasise what we can see with the unaided eye, so that when you use equipment you will find it much easier to look for and identify the deep sky objects.
  • A few basics about astrophotography.

We will be going outside at night with camping chairs to sit on and camping mats to lie on (to make looking at overhead stars easier). Here we will introduce you to the night sky! You will learn how to identify the patterns and shapes in the sky, and navigate visually from one star to another. The presentation will be fun and lively.

There will also be quizzes, astronomy DVDs and other fun indoor activities.

As most of the course will be outdoors, many layers of warm clothing are essential, including hats and gloves, and windproof outer shell clothing.

In order to get you started with finding your way around the stars we have produced a brief downloadable guide to using the well known constellation of Cassiopeia as a means of locating other stars and consetellations using "star-hopping". You will need to use the magnification controls within Adobe Reader in order to view the charts properly. Hope you find it helpful whether or not we ever meet you on the course! Also here is a game for kids Find The Great Bear which will help them to locate the constellation of Ursa Major. We have also compiled a quick quiz to test your astronomical knowledge: Astronomy Quiz and Astronomy Quiz Answers. Have fun.
